Google acquires over 1000 IBM patents

Google has bought more than 1,000 patents from IBM. This move is sourced to protect itself against lawsuits from other technology companies. Google wanted to boost its property portfolio with the new purchase. The portfolio currently includes just 700 patents, as per the sources.

The patents enclose a range of topics, including microprocessing chips, regional databases and memory fabrication and architecture. However, Google has not disclosed the amount it has paid for IBM patents.

Earlier, Google lost the battle for huge portfolio of Nortel patents to an Apple-led consortium which included Microsoft, Apple, RIM, Sony and Ericsson all competing against Android phones.

Google is involved in more than 45 patent lawsuits - the biggest against any leading player. That’s why it wants to strengthen up its bank of patents.

Google’s famous Android Operating System is vulnerable to many legal challenges. Oracle is seeking billions for damages caused by Google claiming that Android has infringed its Java patents.

Hopefully, after acquiring 1,000 patents from IBM, Google would be more secure and protected against patent litigations.
